Apprenticeships

Hands-on experience, valuable skills and a pathway to in-demand employment

Apprenticeship

What is an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a structured training program that combines on-the-job learning with classroom instruction, allowing individuals to gain practical work experience while developing skills in a specific trade or profession. Apprenticeships are typically used in skilled trades, such as carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, and machining, but are also found in other industries like health care, information technology and manufacturing.

What are the benefits?

  • Students: Apprenticeships are a great way to gain real-world experience and earn a wage while learning.
  • Paid Employment: Apprentices work for an employer while being paid for their time on the job and gain valuable hands-on experience.
  • Classroom Instruction: Along with on-the-job training, apprentices attend classes or workshops to learn the theory and technical knowledge needed for their trade.
  • Certification: Upon completion, apprentices often earn a certification or credential that qualifies them as skilled workers in their trade. This certification can significantly improve their job prospects and earning potential.
  • Employers: Employers in apprenticeship programs gain several benefits, including access to a highly skilled workforce, reduced turnover, and improved productivity. Additionally, the College can reimburse an employer 50% of a student鈥檚 wage under the Illinois Cooperative Work Study (ICWS) Grant. For more information, please contact Laura Gregory.
  • Customized Training: Employers can tailor the training to meet the specific needs of their business. Apprentices learn the skills that are directly applicable to the company鈥檚 operations.
  • Lower Initial Labor Costs: Apprentices are paid a lower wage during their training compared to fully qualified workers, offering the employer access to affordable labor as they develop their skills.
  • Workforce Planning: Apprenticeships help employers develop a steady pipeline of skilled workers, ensuring they have the talent they need as their business grows.
